for English version see below Fick hörlurar av mina föräldrar som födelsedagspresent. So it begins, my last week in Boston. The absence of new posts on the blog stems from me prioritizing other things (the visit of my family, thesis writing…). Following, I will go to the graduation ceremony in Munich, Germany. As usual, it is part of summer school slots lounge aol games free, where the new students get to meet the older comrades from the program. It’s usually very nice, as the whole class gets to hang out (which only happens this one time a year, since we’re spread out over the universities for the rest of it), and one can gain inspiration from the older students who graduate. This summer feels a little heavier, because we are the ones who should inspire — show what this program has taught us and what we have accomplished during the course of our projects. In addition, there’s the melancholy that naturally comes when finishing a chapter in ones life; what a ride this has been! Now, new adventures are waiting around the corner. for English version see below This week I have mostly struggled with writing and learning new computer languages. It is in many ways like other languages. When one learns the basic principles it seems simple, eventually one learns how to interpret the main idea behind the code written by other people, and you struggle to find the right way to express yourself. It can be frustrating, and sometimes you want to just give up. But the satisfaction is great when the computer actually understands a sentence. For those who are new to Unix, I found this amazing introduction. Såg även andra flygfän There is one more similarity between art and science, namely the idea of affirmation junkies. Is it not so with artists, that they will do anything to get attention? Is it not so with scientists? The flaw in this reasoning, as I see it, is to equate the effort these people put into their work with their hope for others’ confirmation. Who draws this conclusion? Is not the opposite claim as valid? Who accepts to put their life in work with such a high risk of rejection? Who goes through the painful psychological process that this sort of work requires, without any guaranteed confirmation of accomplishment in the end? Grand Canyon in a distance Nordligt Arizona landskap Till sist, typiskt kul om munk i rymden . It’s easy to end up there though, when it concerns ones life. When the money for the next six months depends on you selling/publishing enough. This is why it is so important to me that we have state-funded art and research. Money set aside to give people the chance to have uncompromising artistic and intellectual freedom—and to give this chance regardless of your parents’ legacy. The Miles are the Goal It is incredibly rewarding to meet people that come from different disciplines than oneself. Those who are not familiar with your topic often ask questions very fundamental questions, of which’s answer one might not be reminded on the other days of the year when hanging out with your common nerds. In addition, we had an interesting discussion on genopolitics, i.e. the idea that our political attitudes have a hereditary component. Is it reasonable? According to this study. yes! I’m not a behavioral geneticist, so if you have questions you can contact my brilliant colleague Ella who recently got her master’s project on the personality of crickets published. Applause. I’m now seated in the cafeteria at Boston Airport. I have been drinking espresso, eating salad with potato chips for lunch (it’s all about balance), and am now looking out over the aircrafts rolling over the asphalt. The sun is blazing and makes the air tremble. I’m going to Sweden for a week to meet with family, friends, and celebrate midsummer. The plan was to guide two of my classmates to Swedish summer, but as one of them was denied his residence permit this will instead turn into an amusing outing with mine and Gil’s (my sweet heart) respective families. It will be fun to introduce them to each other, show the Portuguese our Swedish traditions (as, Why are frogs so hilarious?) and where I come from. Also, I have missed my family enormously, so the prospect of being with them for a whole week makes me deeply happy. There is a reason that so much of our modern science (and art!) was founded by upper-class white men: they had the (social and financial) capital to educate themselves, sit in the cab, and look out over a passing landscape. Today I sit in a car and massage my temples, but it has not been made possible through my family’s heritage, but through Swedish (and European!) taxpayers’ money (and the school reform in 1927 that gave women the right to higher education in Sweden). Consider the work that lies behind our world. I look around and can not point to a single thing that I myself created. I look at my fingers on the keyboard, the text in front of me, and think that my means of production has been given to me. Purple sunset in New York, on the visit with my family Continued downtown free 0800 numbers, into the Public garden (that stems from 1830 or so, two centuries after the creation of Boston Common). There were so many plants and people! It was honestly ridiculous, the sun shining, people smiling, good street musicians, water running… I was quite overwhelmed. Headed down through Chinatown, and onwards to the Green Way. There used to be a big high way, then, through the Big Dig (between 1993 – 2006) they dug down the high way underground. People were in fury that it took so long and cost a lot of money, but now it has proven to be über effective for the through traffic, and on top of it, what used to be a sketchy and noisy area has turned into a popular park. There was a market, and a lot of people from ComiCon (including storm troopers!!). The Green way also has a great carousel with funny animals. Got an ice cream sandwich, from cookie monstaaaaah. Freaking delicious. Not vegan, but I made an exception as *cough* cultural experience, pffft. Btw, Boats on happy river ”…and it’s not possible to make film to be liked. One should make films because you have to, and you feel yourself that ”this, I have no choice, I have to do this production,” and then fuck it if it becomes a success or not — it can not be the first and the most important, to get back the money all the time.” Passed by a memorial for the Holocaust, and also one for the Armenian genocide. I’m impressed and touched by how the U.S. commemorates the origin of its immigrants, and the cause of their emigration from their homes. I wish we did that in Sweden, celebrating the diversity instead of kicking down all that is not the ”ursvensk”… Ur in Swedish means ”out of”, as in originating from. When we want to celebrate someone. we talk about them as a ”true Swede”, and when we disapprove we emphasize their foreign ancestry (the case of Lyudmila Engquist who was referred to as the former-russian when her doping became known). Went by the Italian parts of town, saw some propaganda about keeping ”North End Pure” (that is, not breeding with others), appalling! Also went through the North End park before heading home. This beautiful depiction of my ideal home is drawn by Elias Ericson (http://eliasericson.tumblr.com ) Empty thoughts (because, empty shell) What a fantastic weekend we have had in Boston! The heat is rising, 28°C today. Me and my friend knows an astronomer through the university, and he invited us and his colleague to visit a nature reserve outside Boston, called World’s End. We saw the Boston skyline, and some birds. Among other red-tailed hawk Buteo jamaicensis, and red-winged blackbird Agelaius phoeniceus. Since New Year’s online kasino sverige dimokrsternas, I have tried to add a picture and name of the birds/animals (and sometimes plants) that I see in a folder on Pinterest. It makes it a task to look for new species, and moreover, I get a name to what I see. You can find the folder here(though I’m afraid the names are only in Swedish and Latin). for English version see below I got something called a Raspberry lime Rickey from the local café 1369. which is lime juice, raspberry sirup, sparkling water, and ice. So tasty! Walked down to and over Massachusetts bridge that is quite far. Still, so beautiful to see all the sailing boats on the river, the sun reflected in the water. There were two young men sharing a wine bottle and then jumping off the bridge into the Charles. I saw them on their way there and again passed by them when they went out of the water. It is now less than two months before I take my Master’s degree. It has been a fantastic journey! The first of September I will start on a clean slate, namely PhD studies at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. I will be guided by my academic idol, Prof. Dr. Sarah (Sally) Otto. I will return to modeling, but after this semester, I have also gained more interest in the molecular processes. I feel excited to study at such a good and nice university. Also, I have the great fortune that Gil, my dear friend who always motivates me to be better, also will begin at UBC. We will even share accommodation, at the international St. John’s College. What a dream. As a final note, for those of my friends who do not study genetics and evolution (or, by the way, even for to those who do!). There is a great introduction to the series Genetics and Evolution by Mohamed Noor on Youtube. I go there sometimes, when I confuse different concepts and need to go back to the roots of a question. I believe he explains very pedagogically and also convey quite complex concepts clearly. So I highly recommend it! ONWARDS. Went to the harbour and Aquaria and saw seals, they’re so wonderful! Then across another bridge to come to the old harbour quarters besta online casino europe, what they call Seaport. History was captured on some boards, and there was the Institute of Contemporary Art. who has free concerts every Thursday night (actually went there this Thursday and listened to this great artist). THEN spela casino kelleys, went back through North End, stopped by Hay Market with all the fruit and veggies you can dream of. There was also a Puerto Rican festival with music and merry go rounds and all. The first time I began to reflect on the similarities between artistic professions and academic research was during a summer course in flora and fauna in Uppsala. I asked the assistant graduate students how their living / residential / working conditions were like. Their response besta casino yahoo, short-term plans for the next few months; insecure funding; project employments, immediately reminded me of artists, whose opportunity to work with their passion is founded on others’ generosity and hard work. Make no mistake, I appreciate the importance of science and art in our society. What I am constantly amazed by is that I have the opportunity to do it. Noomi Rapace, in interview above for English version see below Maybe I will write a post about summer school when I get there, otherwise this will probably be the last post on the MEME blog. I thought I’d share some photos and post a track list that catches my US experience (see Swedish version above). Here’s a novel of my Saturday last weekend. Check out the route here. but don’t judge me for my lack of google maps skills. Up in the Air (clip above) was long on my top favorite movies. So how will I Climate compensate for all this flying you wonder? Is it not enough that you eat vegan and donate money to environmental organizations, others wonder. Jokes aside, air transport is the fastest growing source of carbon emissions. My return trip to Stockholm will result in a release of 2.310 tons of carbon dioxide (just based on a single passenger). It is equivalent to what a household gives off in two and a half months (you can compare climate impacts here )! Airplanes remind me of the Icarus myth, in that our ancestors invented this amazing technology with which we can lift above the clouds, but which we now use in an unsustainable way. There are several different companies and organizations through which you can climate compensate your travel. This time I used Zero Mission. maybe next time I will use something else. As Yazmín, my dearest friend and companion, left the house last Saturday morning, I felt alone and anxious. What better thing to do than to explore the city I’m soon about to leave! I have it pretty darn good I do. I was laying in bed with a cold all of last week, but finished strong with a birthday celebration together with my lab mates. It is not easy to acquire a social network when you arrive alone in a city without any contacts. Thankfully, my colleagues turned out to be angels and invited me into their community. It makes me truly happy! Leave is a safe card to stimulate your brain. To sit quietly and look out at a passerby scenery. Reading other people’s words, hearing other people’s thoughts. After a week in Arizona, I feel born again. All the new impressions act as fuel to my creative process, and that is what science is about.
